yes, unitarians have nativity sets

We are pretty much ready for christmas.
Some loose ends and wrapping still need to be, uh, tied up, but we are just about there.

Youngest has finished his school concerts

first chair

how cute does he look?
And he played a fabulous solo with the jazz band.

Middle played with the high school last night. They opened with a rousing and wonderful Sousa March. Rousing as in tear inducing, heart thumping terrific, Sousa March -- conducted by the very temperamental, intense maestro.

sousa march
I seem not to have captured in this photo, the fact that the band is so huge that the kids barely fit on the stage!

And Oldest has played his coffee house gig.

And as the median age at the coffee house was 18, I did not attend. But Middle reports that it went well.

I've gotten the last of the decorations up.

err christmas

And thought I would have a word with you regarding the nativity set.
Everyone is blogging about their nativity set right now -- or maybe I've been caught up in a christian blogring...
anyway, I thought I would discuss our set.
Because it is definitely discussable.

nat use

It is from the home of my maternal grandmother, and somewhere I have the part that enables one to put a blue nightlight bulb up where the star is.
The manger has gotten a little wobbly, but that is probably because it is cardboard.
The figures are chalk, and chipping, though one of the sheep is flocked.
The Mary and Joseph admiring the baby are original, but some other figures wandered in from who knows where. The camel and king with the gold turban are newer, but still from the 1960's. There were three or four Josephs. A couple of them have been buried, upside-down to ensure the sale of one or another of my parent's homes.
What?
You never heard of burying the figure of Joseph upside-down in your garden so that your house will sell?
What I like best about the set is baby Jesus.

baby

He's a little chipped, and a little dirty. A lot of children have played with him over the years.
And his little swaddling cloth is made of moleskin, because that's what my grandmother had on hand when his original cloth went missing. My aunts and uncles had a good laugh over that...baby Jesus wearing foot padding.
As I have read, on other blogs, about children playing with nativity set I have remembered how I loved to play with this one -- and how my boys have played with it each year when I take it out.
My grown brothers enjoy seeing it each year too, when they come here for breakfast on christmas morning...and one year Darth Vader appeared at the foot of the manger with the kings - I'm pretty sure B was responsible for that.

I feel like christmas is crashing down on us -- but in the back of my mind is christmas breakfast
which I am so looking forward to.
I just need to get us to there.

OMG! That is the exact same nativity set my family has had for years and years and years!! It's positively ancient (well over 50 years old). What are the chances?

Well, in some circles he is LORD Vadar...

I'm not feeling the crash so much as the excitement level go through the roof as the girl lies in bed, eyes wide, with v. important christmas related info she just MUST share.

Your breakfast, it sounds like just the perfect culmination of this whole season.

Tooo cool! I am the lone non-musician in a family of musicians (my lil' sis once guest soloed w/ the NM Symphony Orchestra on the piano... we're talking about GOOD musicians). Did you do the lesson thing and enforce practicing or are yer kiddos self starters?

Anne - the nativity set is probably close to 80 years old.

--erica, tee hee1 we have ornaments of the smores people (not religious figures though).

Badger - thank you for, uh, enlightening us.

Bon - the boys do have lessons and sometimes practice their instruments on their own (especially the ones they play for fun: guitars and drums) but I don't enforce the practice thing as they play everyday at school and again on sunday mornings.

Blackbird, I am LOVING the decoration and the memories locked inside the nativity set. Loving them.

The stars I am particularly in love with, can I copy? Pretty please?

I hope you have the MOST wonderful Christmas. And that the jambon makes it this time, oui?

The upside down Joseph is a bit, um, iffy from a theological point of view (if the Jesuits are anything to go by)...but the intercession of Our Lady of Loreto is pretty fail-safe.

My grandmother had the same nativity set! I so remember the little blue light and the chalkware figures. I think my uncle has it now, or my sister...not sure. But I am loving reliving all the holiday concerts through you. I so miss going to them now that the two oldest are in college. The Teen isn't in Band this year because she's taking Regents Bio in 8th grade and has to lose an elective for band. I was seriously thinking of going to the h.s. concert by myself because I love it so much!

I love, love, love the boots. You are a snazzy decorator lady. I had a feeling. Now I know...and knowing is half the battle.

Everyone already said what I was going to say (not the marshmellows, but what a nice nativity, love the boots, want to copy the stars...) so I'll just say: "I'm up!" Let the coats be shown!

AND AND AND I'm going to be at work at 9 am, a feat not done by me since before Thanksgiving!!
