show and tell: a rock

This week's show and tell was suggested by Sarah Louise, who I am appointing president of the Blackbird fan club as she only ever has lovely things to say about me. She's tall and enthusiastic and likes pink sneakers.
And she wants to see a rock.
And I pinky swear that I had no idea, NO IDEA I TELL YOU, that I would have such a good opportunity to show you a rock...or two.

At first I thought I could show you this rock -

pie rock

The infamous slice of pie rock. From a camping trip. I don't remember where or when. I could claim that I hate camping so much that I have blocked out the memory of it, but that would only be half true. The other half of the truth is probably that I was drunk for most of the trip and that's why I don't remember it.

Then, I figured I could show you these rocks...

japanese rocks

Black Japanese river rocks that my parents paid a princely sum for, back in the early 70's when people didn't decorate with rocks. These have traveled far and wide and been featured in many gardens at many different homes. I now have custody of them and really need to do something to highlight them. They are just spilled near my kitchen door...perhaps I will set them in the pot with my lemon tree.

I have rocks all over the house too - beach rocks mostly, but also a rock from Walden Pond, a chunk of brick from Frank Lloyd Wright's Robie house (which K paid $20 for!) and rocks from every place I've ever been...

But as it turned out, I had to purchase some rocks myself yesterday. And arrange for them to be delivered.

truck

We are putting huge irregular slabs of blue stone where our old broken cement patio was.

men

I love getting deliveries like this.
It was a grand show.

arm

plastic wrap

It was cling filmed into place -- plastic wrapped...sticky on one side. Amazing.

slabs

K and B and A and S, hopefully, will carry each piece around back and lay them in an interesting shape this weekend. Hopefully.

2 pallets

Really, B? they aren't THAT big...the biggest ones cracked in half during the delivery...

Oh sure, I'll bet K can carry these around your whole yard so you can place them in JUST the right spot. NO problem.

Good luck with that.

can't talk. Laughing.

I volunteer to run the book on just how long those rocks are going to sit on that palette blocking the driveway and/or the number of HOURS it will take to move them.

THEY ARE NOT THAT BIG.

(oh god, when my brother see's this he's going to cancel)

You make a girl blush! You show me your rocks...if I had known you were showing me YOUR rocks, I'd have taken a picture of the Brazilian crystalized rock I have. Next time.

I'm up.

Oh, and the blog gods have blessed me with a short vw!

Nice rocks. Maybe B will come and climb them instead...

Those are some mighty rocks :)

I never realized that people collected rocks but this is so interesting. I didn't have any rocks of my own but didn't have to go far to find the ones I posted.

I love your big rocks for the garden/patio. Glad I don't have to help move them.

Black rock at the base of a lemon tree? Lovely...

Will we get to see what you do with those big rocks?

I'm up.

But they are thin. So they must not be heavy...right? ehem.

blocking K from parking your driveway is a fancy kind of motivation.

I am up.

You take the prettiest pictures.

Mine's up.

Oh! This is delightful! We collect a rock-a-place, too! The boys have them scattered hither and yon.

I'll be up very late. And to B - they REALLY aren't that big. I have moved some that size. Sandstone, but still - It's doable. And I'm sure there will be good grub afterwards, and much appreciation for your effort over many years to come.

We got three pallets of dinner-plate-sized Pennsylvania bluestone a few years back, dumped most unceremoniously on the front grass. Took us almost two years to puzzle-piece it into a garden path/patio, but it looks lovely. I'm sure yours will go MUCH faster than that, and also look lovely.

Mine's up --

I love your rocks! Very very cool. We put flagstone or sandstone or something like that in our koi pond area. We so love it. We have pretty ground cover growing around it. You will really like the look and feel.

I was such a dork and posted my show and tell on Monday.

Holy crap. Those are some serious rocks. I bet they feel smooth to the touch, yes?

I'm up. And BEFORE midnight. Wow.

You lucky lucky lucky girl. How I'd love to have a patio of slabs like that. My sister had one at her last home and she grew a mix of moss and creeping lemony thyme stuff in between all the cracks. It was beautiful, smelled wonderful, and felt great underfoot. I don't envy your work crew though! Even so, you're a lucky girl, and a lemon tree to boot!

I'm so sad i've been too busy and had to miss this one...i knew you had something up your sleeve when you suggested it.

I really want o see the finished product. We are thinking rocks in a big way for borders etc. I'm having trouble picturing it all.

Thanks for the great show and tell!
