that Carly Simon song

The anticipation leading up to a trip like this is mighty. The world is SWIRLING around us -
The kids are finished with their exams and K is involved in a huge project at work.

I have been sure that something was going to go wrong, and things have.
The airline informed us that they no longer fly to our island retreat on Fridays -
and so we leave Saturday morning, at 4.
(Actually they didn't inform us at all, they sent an adjusted itinerary, different by 6 minutes, and left it to us to see that we were only making half the journey.)
I calmed down for a couple of weeks, and yesterday K was putting our passports in his passport case when he noticed a bad thing.
His passport had expired four months ago.
He spent quite a long time on the phone with the Tuvalan Ministry of Travel, and has two appointments at the embassy, and paid $120 and it still isn't renewed. Hopefully today.

house

Picture 1
Our vacation house is the one with the orange roof.

I've been pressing, packing and making lists like a crazy woman.
I know it seems nutty to press things like shorts and tee shirts, but I hate it when I look at the kids in the morning while on vacation and their clothes are all rumpled.
And though we aren't going anywhere (this is a resting vacation) I want them to look tidy.

I've ordered groceries.
Vida is set to make us flying fish, macaroni pie, coconut bread and pumpkin fritters. I still need to ask her for orange cake.
Then she will give me a shopping list and we will do a big shop for the week.

fish market
The fish market has blue roofs.

Today I will take the boys to a book store. We don't really watch television when we go away and I know they will want to curl up with some reading in the evening.
I am going to stop at Old Navy and see if I can get a couple of pairs of shorts. I only own two pair and one of them sits above my navel - outdated I think...

K has sent me a link to the weather for the island and there are strong chances for rain towards the end of the week and I am hoping it doesn't affect our trip.
But at this point I feel like I'd go to the beach anyway.

beach
Our favorite beach.

The owner of the house wrote to me yesterday to remind me which staff members will make appearances and when -
a man for the pool
a gardener
Etheline...
he also mentioned that the house has internet service.

We will soon see.

Here, for show and tell, is my luggage -
in various stages of readiness.

piles
I know EVERYTHING that's in that pile - and where it goes.

suitcases
A stack of antique suitcases in my room. Not going.

m's suitcase
A rolling bag borrowed from my pal M.

duffel
The KING of luggage. One of two Orvis duffel bags. Guaranteed for life, they have proven to be real workhorses - and Orvis has proved to be true to their word and have done repairs on them free of charge.

SO. JEALOUS.

Oh! But Target has these shorts, they are made by Cherokee, they come in many colors and have just a teeny bit of stretch, and they are wonderful. Not too high, not too low, not too short, not too long. And only $12. Or maybe it's $12.99.

So you should go THERE.

hold on. *rubs eyes*

sorry, spent the first half of the post blinded by jealousy.

i love the duffel bag but not as much as the antique suitcases...

OH, Wow, that looks like a rich & famous playground hideaway. I can't wait to see pictures on your return.

I'm up.

Oh I love me some of that flying fish.
Gorgeous location.
Shorts? I thought they contravened every fashion law you adhere to. But I guess no one is going to see them on the LUXURY ISLAND BEACH.
I'm up.

Oh, I hope you have a wonderful time! The fish market and the ocean are the same color, coincidence? I like to walk the beach when it's starting to get stormy and in the morning as the sun comes up. Whenever D and I are at the beach we get up early take our coffee and stroll until well after sunrise.

Don't forget to unplug the coffee pot before you leave for the airport. I always worry that I forgot, I've even sent people in to check after we've left:).

I'm up.

I'd be blinded by jealousy too, except that I'm so relieved.

You see, I've been known to iron my kids' shorts and t-shirts, too.

Have a great trip! (And post daily! Don't think we didn't notice that little part about internet access.)

i'm up, though i'm sorry i haven't made it any easier by not putting it up on blogspot instead. lol. i think i may work on my "100 things" today, and then get this show on the road ;)

GAH!

Laura - I get a 404 not found for that link...does this mean you are going to blog on blogger?

Badger - I WILL. though I do think we are built very differently.

Jenny - IT IS CHEAPER THAN THE CAPE.

LC - we leave in 1 day, 18 hours, 37 minutes.

Poppy - I don't know about 'every day' we'll see.

Loretta said...

Cheaper than the Cape = with airfare??? Wildly jealous and needing to know all particulars and wondering if they have any houses for late August.

You're going to have such a lovely time....

Pea-green jealous. But happy for you!

Will the boys take guitars so you can have music in the evenings?

Susie Sunshine said...

I'm not jealous a bit. I'm THRILLED you're going to such a gorgeous place and letting me take a cyber peek!

(Anyone fun at the mansion closer to the beach?)

It will all work out and be great (unless mysterious snakes appear on your beach. That would hella suck.)

I'm thrilled for you AND jealous. Have a great time. You seem very organized and ready to go.

The closest I'll be getting to a summer island vacation is a trip to Target to try those shorts!

Okay, so just looking at the photos I had a sense of calm and relaxation come over me.

Have a wonderful, wonderful time!

I won't get luggage up in time but may do packing boxes this weekend... In the meantime does 'baggage' count? I've started recording some of the corners of the old house just before we move to the new one. (www.ladieslounge.blogspot.com)

Thinking of you, and the orange cake, and the flying fish, and the beaches, and Etheline...
