It's even funnier when Middle reads it directly from here.

email

So many things are swirling around me - a crazy week.
My thoughts are scattered.
I sat at my desk very early yesterday (I had organized a company breakfast and meeting)
I was working my ass off and feeling stressed when I opened this email from a friend at the office:

Subject: Sing It Sister

Oh happy day (oh happy day)
I'm talking about the happy days (oh happy day)
C'mon and talk about the happy days (oh happy day)
Oh, oh, oh happy days (oh happy day)
Ooh talking about happy day (oh happy day)
Oh yeah, I know I'm talking about happy days (oh happy day)
Oh yeah, sing it, sing it, sing it, yeah, yeah (oh happy day)
Oh, oh, oh
Oh happy day.....

I took stock for a moment and realized/remembered what great people I work with.
How lucky am I?
After my long and somewhat tedious day, a friend of mine from Tuvalu met me in town for drinks which was really wonderful. (Effusive, amn't I?)
Did I mention that I was alone in a room with Alton Brown for about ten minutes?
I was.
Questions?

and also this

Don't ask me about Middle and Art School.
I've spent weeks talking with him and had suspected as much all along. (Last semester was not exactly "fulfilling" though his grades were excellent.)
He has requested a one year Leave Of Absence.
He's "having too much fun" working two jobs and filming things like BMW LeMans racing cars.
He isn't sure he wants/needs to be at college.
We have talked and discussed and argued the points and agreed.
We've worked on it for weeks, but there you are.
We are, K and Middle and me, bereft over the decision making.
But he has decided, and we move on from here.
We are, each, in our own little worlds of reaction.

It's true.
He does very fine work.

but wait, there's more

desk

Filed under: Just Another Day At The Office.
What does one do when one orders cases of fine wine which are delivered in terrible heat?
One opens a bottle to see if "it has gone off."
It hadn't.

bracelets

Pretty, yes?
Don't ask me - I've no idea where I saw them.

<span class=

Truly.
I must.
I have to have dresses like these.
I need to commission a friend who sews - they are so simple!

fiat 500

We WANT one of these!
Paola has one. Of course, she had to marry her Absolutely Gorgeous Husband to get one - but, we all make sacrifices.

fall

I am beginning to itch

for Fall clothes.

socks

Sock dreams is a great site.

over the knee

I'll have a pair of these, thank you.

<span class=

And these too.

the monsoon

K and I puttered around all day yesterday.
We did a washing machine experiment (a switch is broken, but all you have to do is bang your fist, once, on the lid, and it works just fine), we did some chores, we worked on a project with Middle, I painted my toes...and, finally, at about three o'clock, we decided to pick up some things at the store.
It was getting cloudy but we hopped on the scooter.
We needed eight or nine things.

<span class=

(incidental and unrelated shot of K parking the scooter at the train station)

We parked, noted the darkening sky, and went inside the market.

scooters

(and, incidentally, do you SEE who K has parked in front of?!)

We got some chicken, some fruit, some Fage and a green pepper. (Fascinating, isn't it?)

Whilst looking for some donuts I glanced outside and noticed it was very dark.
K joined me on line and there was a sudden gust of tremendous wind just outside the door and I noticed the grocers running to put away the umbrellas that shade the outdoor displays.
We were halfway through check-out when the store lost power for a second and our order was lost in the blackout.
The cashier (Samuel, whom I love) asked us to move to the next register as the monsoon began in earnest.
It was raining sideways. Tree branches were blowing across the parking lot. The lady at the next register would not let us approach.
While I ran around the back side of the line, K tried to get onto the front side of the line - the wind howled and sheets of water hit the windows while people ooohed and fretted.
I explained to anyone who would listen that we were on a motorcycle but no one seemed to care.
We checked out again. I thanked Samuel and told K to check the scooter as I was worried that the wind might have knocked it down.
He returned and we moved to an open porch-like part of the store where we were mesmerized by the monsoon.
It was torrential. There was water everywhere. We were getting soaked when K and Middle called each other. Middle had things under control at home (closing windows and checking pumps) and was wondering if we were in the car...
After a brief discussion about how and when to get home which vaguely resembled that movie scene where the guy screams at his love: No matter what occurs, I will find you during which K did not want me on the back of the scooter under such conditions and I did not want K on the scooter at all, we went out into the tempest and made our way home.
We were soaked.
The groceries were soaked.
The house was okay.
The Jeep is full of water (it leaks).
There are branches everywhere.
Our bed was covered with pine needles and sticks.
The basement is dry.
It was very dramatic and the boys met us on the porch - with cameras, of course.

the weekend

Daniel Schorr died on Friday and my weekends will sound different from now on...National Public Radio is a constant in our kitchen, over the weekend paper, whilst making waffles, off in the car to the ocean, and we listened to his deep, slightly gravelly voice with the hope that he'd make sense of the things we were hearing. I, for one, always counted on him to reassure me that, though there might be doubts, things might be okay. He never let me down.

guy in hat

I followed this very tall, impressive fellow through part of the station on Friday.

really cool guy

I tried to get a clearer shot of him - but now I like the way these look.
His suit was perfect, cut narrowly with just a little sheen to it.

map

Neat map? Watch for it at BlogHer where I've worked hard on a shopping post which will go live sometime before NY is besieged by The Women Who Blog! (I'll keep you posted.)

sill

HOThothot summertime heat. It's awfully humid here in Tuvalu and the cicadas are buzzing.
We attended Youngest's final summer concert on Friday evening. It was very dramatic as a huge storm was approaching the harbor where the band shell sits. The sky was purple and lightning flashed almost constantly. The conductor "called an audible" and announced that they would play only three compositions leaving us to safely return to our homes, which was a relief as we were sitting under one of the biggest trees in Tuvalu.

It was Youngest who requested the beach this weekend (I spurred us on last weekend).

Youngest 1

He's still practicing with his new skimboard...

which leaves me with lots of photos like this -

Youngest

but he has been somewhat successful.

on the beach

And still takes a beating from time to time.

conversation, good

The bonus: a couple of hours of one-on-one time with him. Fabulous conversation and insight.
Aren't you glad we don't have an adversarial relationship? he asked me. So many kids I know can't stand their parents - but I've never felt that way....

Today, I'm working with Middle on a couple of projects. Middle has given me so much to think about this week - none of it bad, but all of it weighty.
And I'm going to touch up my hair.
And paint my toes.

Friday

The Thursday newspaper is my favorite. There is a fashion section and a home decor section and I just cannot wait to dig into it on the train. I even, sometimes, leave the puzzles for the trip home as I am too excited.
This week I read this:

clothing diet

which was a story I was somewhat familiar with. The idea behind the clothing diet, the ultimate goal, is to increase awareness of rampant consumerism while forcing us to take a look at our spending habits and wardrobes at the same time. A bunch of people in the internet world spent time not buying clothing (that they did not need) and made themselves wear six or ten or fifteen items of clothing only during a specified period of time. People documented this experiment, people took no-spending oaths, it was interesting to watch/read about.

And I am no different than most people...mostly.
Because I didn't used to have my own income and with K being a freelance guy for most of our lives (I do need to write a post about freelance employment vs. full-time staff employment) I have never really been free and easy with the idea of shopping. It has always been a rare occurrence wherein I felt comfortable shopping for no specific reason - though I will admit that I had a great time buying my go-to-work clothes and I do sometimes whine for something new, I don't usually purchase anything.
Am I veering off?
Okay, so, I read the article and thought: I am the perfect candidate for this experiment! I have not bought anything just for the sake of buying something for a long time (with my own money and not gift money). And I could, conceivably, choose ten items from my closet and wear only them for a month (accessories were not subject to the rules). It must be freeing, on some level, to know what you ARE going to wear every day, no?

A skirt, a top, a pair of jeans, a pair of leggings, a dress, a cardi - layered, accessorized, belted! I could do it.
There's nothing I NEED right now (though my belt looks pretty shoddy).
I will be monk-like I think!
I will be so streamlined!
I save money!
I could clean out my closet, get rid of some things I never wear!

I walked to work with this plan.
I was invigorated.

I sat down and opened my email.

new arrivals

Hey! What's this? Oof! Just look at that sweater! It's glorious!

<span class=

Indeed!

stripes

The top underneath it is not my style...

shorts

Hmmm...no wool shorts...

bag I don't need

OH! BUT THE BAG! I so want the bag! My black tote is falling apart - and $65 is not a terrible amount of money...(she says looking down at the black tote and spying the newspaper article inside her bag).

SLAPS FOREHEAD.

It seems I have some work ahead of me after all.

then I hit delete

Some of you were surprised to read that I receive email pitches.

email1

So, I thought I'd show you some of them.

email2

I think, for one reason or another, that I may be ineligible for this contest.

email3

Apparently there is lots to do at camp.

email4

Would I like to interview Amy Roloff? No. Would I like to have cocktails with Amy Roloff? Probably. But that's not what "Chase Wang" is offering me.

email5

I'm probably also ineligible to receive a copy of this book. Not that I'd want one.

email6

I need to go and vote for a baby. I'll bet they're cute.

email7.<span class=

So many things about this last one trouble me. I am offended by the use of 911 in the subject line, which I find inflammatory.Plus, I'm afraid this "Valued Customer" calls bullshit on infant deaths being prevented by breastfeeding - not that I doubt that breastfeeding is healthy for babies.

Seven emails before three o'clock, I had another seven by five.

slow blogging

My office blog is suffering - people on vacation, people busybusybusy with launches of top secret blahblahblah.
My home blog is floundering as well. (I never know the difference between Fluke and Flounder, fyi.)

BlogHer has me in for three pieces this month (which, believe me, I'm not complaining about) and I've been writing away! And the conference is in just a few short weeks.

And my home-life is fraught! Fraught, I tell you, as Middle is contemplating his future and it IS NOT WHAT WE EXPECTED. (Okay, maybe we did. A little.)

Youngest, in the meantime, is completely enthralled with his pre-college classes in town this month. He's been hither and yon with a camera and has been bent over a sketch book during the wee hours doing homework (this pleases me). He texts me during the day to tell me where he is and how beautiful his surroundings are. I've missed his enthusiasm over the past year or so as he was busy being VERY 16.

So, how about I toss some photos at you?

I have

I need this on a sign. To hang over my desk. Or maybe over my sink.

new book

A new book! By my idol.
I corresponded with Ms. Kalman a few months ago regarding sponges and buckets and ladders and am looking forward to her exhibit next spring.

star tee shirt

Nice tee.

Anyhoo/how/hee, I'm off.

the great scooter excursion

We decided to take the scooter further than we had ever taken it before...6.7 miles over hill and dale and past sea, because I wanted some fresh peaches from a farm we love.
And so we went. Over and around and through the hothothot until we pulled into the dirt parking lot at the farm.

sunflowers

There is a breathtaking sunflower field at the farm.
We parked our scooter between Range Rovers and Smarts and shopped.

barn

We chose some tomatoes and peaches and arugula. I heart arugula.

onions

We bought fragrant onions.

<span class=

We chose the biggest cucumbers.

melon

I asked one of the farmers for a recommendation. His suggestion? Yellow watermelon. Delicious.

inside

The farm is so romantically beautiful.
(This year, I noticed the business card of a photo stylist on the counter. I fear it is no accident that the farm is beautiful.)

bins and coats and flowers

There isn't a huge variety of goods at the farm - only what is available and fresh (still dirt covered). Eggplant (purple and white), potatoes, cucumbers and peppers.

cans of flowers

And huge bins of sunflowers.

We made our purchases -

veg

(the boys bought me sunflowers for my birthday) and hopped back on the scooter and took a different route home...

loading up

scooter

where did we find ourselves? Anthropologie!
For a little birthday shopping!
What did we see?

beautiful dishes

Magnificent measuring cups!

butter dishes

Beautiful butter dishes!

skirt2

A sophisticated skirt! (On sale!)

K entertained himself looking at cookbooks...

summer cookbook

he noted a recipe or two.
And then we went home in the hothothot and had some peanut brittle ice cream.
