You know the planets are all lined up. Or something. I can't remember the configuration right now but K knows it. He did, briefly suggest that we rise at four in the morning to see it but I need my sleep.
The sunburn is kind of bad, even a day later. Two big swatches across my neck and my chest. I'm doing my level best to apply all manner of treatments as I have, of late, been whining that I'm getting "old lady skin" (do your best to imagine it), and I'm sure it will feel better tomorrow.
Anyway, it's quite warm here and we went, this morning, to see Youngest march in the parade. He played and marched past and I had a little cry (parades sometimes make me misty what with the veterans and all) (or it may well be hormones) (or the planets) and then we went down to the town bandshell. They raised the flag and did a rifle salute and played taps and Youngest had a solo playing To The Color and I just wept. A mom I know from town put her arm round me and said: you must be so proud, which is true, but the other half is just that I'm a little bit of a mess too. He's such a good kid. Anyway, I won't go on.
We got home and started chores and I discovered a flood in the basement. The main sewage line from the house has a tendency to become overrun with roots. It took a number of hours for the plumber to arrive and not being able to use the water pretty much halted all household progress. (Though K did continue to smoke what was probably the very best pork shoulder ever.)
My mom arrived for dinner, we all sat and laughed and made sewer-line jokes when our beloved neighbor appeared to say that his dinner guests had backed into my mom's car. They were the nicest people and all will be made right as quickly as possible, but I have to say...well, I have to say that I think it's planetary.
Life in an urban town. Three great boys, one tall gorgeous husband, and a job in the big city.
I've gotten myself a nice crispy sunburn
I think it happens once a year. Either I forget the sunblock entirely, thinking I won't be out long enough, or I miss a spot. This time it was thinking it was too early in the day and I was partly under the umbrella and I kept turning and I had my shirt on, part of the time. Doesn't matter.
It's an odd burn too. My stomach, just inside my elbows, two big stripes diagonally across my neck, and the back of one leg. I had sunblock on my face but, apparently, not the very tip of my nose.
Still, there's nothing I love more than the shower after the beach.
I'm about one third through Rae's book and can't stop! I cannot stop. There is a tension building in the story that has me transfixed. Perhaps that's why I didn't reach for and apply sunblock to my arms?
No. I can't blame Rae, who, btw, emailed me whilst I was on the beach reading her book. Isn't that interesting? I am even more fascinated with Rae's life now. She travels the world with her little tribe and has written this absorbing novel? Fascinating. She also has the most beautiful family in the entire world.
There are two cures for sunburn, you know.
Aloe.
And Sangria.
I'd never lie.

summer Fridays are wasted on me
I got out at one o'clock today, which made my work day feel odd.
There wasn't a train for 45 minutes so I walked more leisurely to the station. I stopped at American Apparel even though I've promised myself never to buy anything there. It's a horrible store and the merchandise could not appear more poorly made. I'm looking for some kind of very gauzy patterned (I know!) scarf to wear this summer.
My train didn't get me home until nearly three o'clock and I remembered that summer Fridays are wasted on me. Do I go home and do housework? Lounge around? Do I stay in town (where it's usually very warm, which I don't like) (and full of tourists)(not fond of that either)?
There are a few other things I forgot about summer in town, most noticeably the smell. My city gets funky in the summer and I always forget about it. More homeless people come out too and join the aforementioned tourists (who walk too slowly).
Of course there are things I like, like seeing people in fabulous outfits rather than outerwear, and those wee little grape tomatoes rolled around in salt (I'm not implying the tomatoes are out on the street, just that they are part of the summer) and my mom's Summer Dip.
This weekend we'll watch Youngest march in a parade and we'll probably have some pulled pork and K and I will have our first trip to the beach.
For now, I've decided on the lounging around option.

Thursday Evening
With thanks to Alice, who inspires me.

Tonight I am grateful for:
Text messages from Youngest, as he moves through his day, recounting triumphs and tragedies.
Half an hour gabbing with a newly friended co-worker.
An interestingly coincidental meeting on the train.
A lavender oil foot rub from my very dear K.
And then he fixed my iPhone!
Watching Globe Trekker.
The office closing at one tomorrow and Monday off.
Friends like Alice.

where and what and who
Oh!
I've been so busy.
I know you've heard it all before but I am particularly busy. And when I'm not busy I'm reclining!
I've been attending an Industry Event at which I've stood up (STOOD ON MY FEET, PEOPLE) for two whole days. But it was a very nice Event and I loved being there.
And, do you know who I met there? Well, lots of people, actually, but ALSO Raych.
I need to tell you that Raych is, without a doubt, one of the most adorable people ON EARTH (her sister is pretty cute too) and her adorableness is only eclipsed by her stupendous enthusiasm. Raych is busy eating her way across the city while she attends the Event and I'm hoping she writes about it as it's quite a list of food she's put away. It was a thrill to meet her and I was sorry to not have more time to hear about her adventures.
Raych is right too, it's hot like summer here but I'm fine as I've a new hot-for-summer haircut.
It's true, I'm not Anna Wintoured anymore and my grey is growing in nicely.
Our neighbor brought me some new tea. He has a herbal remedy business and attends Industry Events of his own and often brings me treats that are being given away at the shows. This time it was this

and I like it very much. Once again, though, I fear I've fallen for a beverage that isn't easy to procure. In the meantime, I've been drinking water. Imagine? I hate water.
Have you ever seen Doc Martin? We've seen a few episodes are liking it. It's certainly less stressful than House. I can't watch stressful things before bed, okay?
I'm back at the office tomorrow, thankfully. I wouldn't mind sitting at my desk for a while.
This week marks the beginning of Summer Fridays. It's very civilized...the office closes at one o'clock.
So, even though it's Wednesday night, it feels like it's nearly the weekend.
Two last things: I am two chapters in to Journey Mama's novel which flows like water. I'll tell you more about it when I'm further in but I can say I love it.
Okay. What about this? Have you seen this?

some good stuff
Can't keep things too serious you know.
Especially after surviving The Rapture.
I was just watching some Drunk Kitchen.
And this made me feel so happy. Thanks LB.
Have a good Sunday, will ya?

yesterday
You know, I'm tempted to drop the titles too, now that I no longer tag my posts.
Tagging posts is all about web placement and such. I have no interest.
(Excepting, of course, when I do posts at BlogHer.)
Yesterday, at work, three of us had a conversation about drowning and the Happy Bunny experiment.
I've tried to find a link to this information (the gist of which was that one feels euphoria when drowning) but I'm afraid the results were not conclusive. And I don't talk about stuff like drowning (though I did in the office as I had a drowning scare once at the very same time that a woman further down the beach was drowning).
We went on, in the afternoon, to try to solve a problem which may only be solved by traveling to Chicago, of all places!
I've had my hair cut. For those keeping track (you cannot possibly be serious) I had it stripped of its color on St. Patrick's Day (which was handy as I had a beer during the process) and have not had it cut since earlier in March. As it has a heavy line of white in it now, my previous Anna Wintour haircut was not working as well. Smooth and sleek only highlighted the line of, uh, highlights. And so, The Hair Genius and I decided to layer it up.

Like this.
I luff it.
(I could write a piece about how comfortable I am in my own, slightly crepe-y looking, skin at this age, because I am, but I'm not. Writing it. Today.)
I have been fortunate enough to have received Rae's book and I'll be reading it and telling you all about it soon. Must force myself to not play Klondike on the train and to READ.
I've also recently read Ms. Lancaster's first foray into fiction which is adorable, and funny and wonderful, as you may well imagine. I had a burger with Ms. Lancaster last week and would brag about how much I love her but can plainly see (she had just done an appearance) that everyone loves her. She is quite loveable.
New love?

Gifted by a neighbor who employs Oldest.
Oldest? He is quite well and adorable. (What? Wasn't he always? Well...Oldest went through some shite too but has pressed forward with our unconditional support and is, well, wonderful.)
Last night, Middle had VIP entrance to a club in town and brought Youngest (both adore DJ/club music) to his first ever such event. They returned at 4:00. I suppose there will be some sleeping-in today.
And so, it seems, the planets are aligned here in Tuvalu. K could always use another work project, but we are humming along.

Thank you – I'll ask him to sign on Monday.
FYI – I'm not sure I'll last the whole day (I feel like I should tell someone) as my allergies are awful and I am pretty miserable.

Isn't that the nicest thing?
I went home and tried to sleep it off but, damn, Claritin AND Sudafed and I am still so blocked up.
I'm so blocked up that when I did my neti-pot-thing the water came out MY EYES.
School is almost done for Youngest, though he does have lots of Very Important Exams. I mention this by way of saying that he is quite well, my Youngest, and is shaping up to be a great guy. (We had a bit of an adolescent period there for a while but I think it's passing.) (What? Do I never mention when we have issues with the children? Did you assume - as well you should - that they are perfect in every way?)

Fabulous thank you card photoshopped up by me.
I'm telling you, it's all in the cropping. We may un-crop a bit for family.
On a whim I ordered six (6!) dresses from AllSaints. You know, the thing about AllSaints is: one cannot possibly tell what the clothing looks like on people whilst perusing the website. It's not much easier in the store (darkdarkdark). So, yeah. Six dresses arrived and I spent a very long time trying them on. In fact, K had to assist me as there were some that were INSCRUTABLE. I could not find armholes!
I could not determine back from front. Some had things HANGING OFF THEM. I returned four.
I kept two. (Excellent math skills, eh?)

Dress one. A flouncy party dress. To be worn at a party. Which I am attending. In June. To celebrate the marriage of a dear office friend. (I'm killing myself with the periods.)
What does it really look like?

Dress two: with things hanging off it.

I added the belt. And the dirty mirror.

As you can see, the photos from the website aren't especially helpful.
I've downloaded these photos too (or is it uploaded?).
No idea.

Was it the haircut? The ink? I dunno.

My office bookshelves were featured in my office blog. Nope. Not handing out the addy on that. Do your own detective work, if you must. I'm still conflicted.
I am head-over-heels for this tea...

...am not supposed to HAVE tea (or alcohol) with my not-serious-but-draining health condition but surely this tea cannot offend!
Finally, there's these

- dear god. Shoes. They are ONLY SHOES.

May 17th
Our special days are all sevens and seventeens.
Today is Youngest's birthday.
He is seventeen.

Let's see if I can come up with 17 things about Youngest.
1. He has the darkest eyes I've ever seen. He was born with blackbrown eyes and we were amazed.
2. He's dark all the way around, actually, and he can have dark moods too.
3. But he's also the most enthusiastic person I've ever met.
4. He works hard for his good grades at school.
5. K was hoping for a baby in the middle of May - hence, Youngest.
6. He has a sweet-tooth.
7. He has overcome physical adversity without ever making an issue of it.
8. He's developed a wonderful sense of humor.
9. He loves all things Japanese.
10. He has beautiful long fingers and is terrible about clipping his nails.
11. Youngest is a gamer.
12. But he enjoys free-running too so I don't worry so much about all the computer time.
13. He is too terribly serious about things.
14. He has a distinct taste in music.
15. We can hardly believe that he doesn't care much for cheese.
16. He will be a tender, good-natured, loving spouse.
17. The four of us are continuously proud of him.
Turns out, that wasn't hard at all.
Happy Day, Dear Youngest. I'm looking forward to your cake tonight!

Happy Day, Dear Youngest. I'm looking forward to your cake tonight!

If only I could blame blogger for my absence.
But the truth of it is I've just been very very busy!
And I'm still jockeying around with medicines and dealing with not feeling 100% vs being
fuzzy-headed.
But none of that matters!
K has found us three little movies from our trip.
I know you want to see them.
A catchy tune, no?
Even catchier, yes?
Such beauty. Such narration!
I'll try to catch you up more tomorrow.
Tonight I'm tired.
what I wore
They've redesigned the Sunday magazine, adding some things I like very much, deleting some things I didn't care much about and, I think, distilling the content.
Anyway, I have a love/hate relationship with this page and thought I'd try my hand.
When not doing laundry and cruising the aisles of her local supermarket, Blackbird is The Executive Assistant to the CEO and President and occasionally works on food drives sponsored by the Post Office.
Wednesday, April 27th
After the doctor requested that I remain home and "get some rest" K and I went to one of my favorite stores where I purchased hook and eye closures. I was wearing black leggings and that Flax linen top I bought on eBay with my Hunter Wellingtons as it was pouring. I think Hunter has cured the blooming issue they had with their boots as I've noticed the newer boots don't turn grey the way mine have. After I was home I switched into my Camper Wabi hemp clogs. Then I took a rest.
Thursday, April 28th
A hellish day at work - after I traipsed around the neighborhood fetching pastries and juice for a morning meeting, we were stood up. No morning meeting! Then a film crew invaded to shoot my boss for a documentary. This required propping his office for the shot. I wore my long white linen shirt dress with a black belt, leggings and my Frye engineer boots. The belt got uncomfortable after a few hours and I removed it. Co-workers referred to me as Doctor for the rest of the day.
Friday, April 29th
I stumbled around from the bedroom to the basement in search of my five year old Old Navy jeans only to discover they were damp and in the hamper. I threw on my JCrew Minnie pants which are missing part of their hook/eye closure (see 4/27) and noticed they were slightly snug. I'm looking forward to K returning to work as he tends to feed me too well. I put a grey long-sleeved ON tee over my camisole and strapped on my platform sandals with socks - it's not that warm out. At work I spent lots of time putting the office back together and dealing with catered lunch and then met K downstairs, rode the train together and had a breezy scooter ride home.
I think you get the picture.

six new truths
1. I have learned that I cannot (always) control how my body reacts/adjusts to situations.
2. For the first time in at least five years, my sleep pattern has changed. I'm not happy about this either.
3. My allergies are much better at the office.
4. And, speaking of allergies, I am now officially allergic to mussels - which doesn't matter as I do not care for them.
5. I do not like Mother's Day.
That last one is unfortunate as my mother (and K's mother) deserve all the praise and love in the world. My mom has never been anything but giving and loving to me and I feel ungrateful not celebrating her today but my heart is not in it. And I don't want to be celebrated either - it just seems silly to me.
I've been a good daughter(and in-law) for a very long time and done my best to fete both of these wonderful women and it's sad, too, because I'm not sure who else in our circle of siblings makes the day lovely for our moms but I've decided not to. And not doing it because I don't like it may not be a valid excuse, but there you are. I could go on and on but I'll stop.
6. I love you every day, Mom.
2. For the first time in at least five years, my sleep pattern has changed. I'm not happy about this either.
3. My allergies are much better at the office.
4. And, speaking of allergies, I am now officially allergic to mussels - which doesn't matter as I do not care for them.

6. I love you every day, Mom.
it's not like I haven't posted
I just haven't posted here.
I wrote a post for our new corporate blog (and been assigned my posting dates for the next couple of months), I've been introduced to my new editor at BlogHer and written a post for her (black two-piece bathing suits) and I made a powerpoint at work all by myself.
So.
I was out of the office for a couple of days this week and have a new medicine (in addition to the three I'm already taking) that makes me a little fuzzy/tired. But I've just cleaned Youngest's room a bit (as a reward for enduring the College Entrance exam this morning) and the downstairs linen closet.
K is out back building a jet pack.

It's for a commercial.

In other news: I played this brilliant word

and won Words With Friends!

AND broke 400 points!
Finally, I am completely addicted to this:

Who'd have thought?

I got this from Lou, Boos and shoes.
Prince William or Prince Harry? William, thank you. I'm not attracted to red-heads.
The ballet or the opera? The ballet.
Bikini or all-in-one? Bikini again.
New best friend: Catherine Duchess of Cambridge or Pippa Middleton? Might I choose Princess Michael of Kent?
Couldn't live without: coffee or tea or chocolate? Tea!
Plan in advance or last minute everything? Planplanplan.
Jeans: skinny or boyfriend? Each have their place.
On holiday: All inclusive resort or go it alone? Go it alone.
All-out worrier or 'let it go' optimist? Worrier, I'm sad to say.
Gemstones: Ruby or Emerald? Ruby.
Perfume: light and floral or heady and musky? Heady, I think. Don't wear it often.
'When Harry met Sally' or 'Sleepless in Seattle'? Harry.
Botox: yes or no? Not so far.
Seasonal anticipation: getting into woolly jumpers and boots or getting into soft cotton and sandals? I like autumn best.
Of a bygone age: Marilyn Monroe or Katherine Hepburn? Katherine! I've never cared for Marilyn.
What is your first thought as you wake in the morning? I don't want to get out of my bed...
from here and there
I'm home for a couple of days - lots of time to browse around the internet.
Thank you to d.Sharp Journal for this:
Fascinating, no? I never gave marionettes much thought, though I do love to watch people busy at their craft.
Filed under: Isn't It A Lovely Thing? Jen has sent me real paper catalogues from her visit, in England, to Toast. Perfect for a lazy day. (And I've missed wishing her a Happy Birthday! Happy Birthday, Jen!)
I have fallen in love with this robe. This dressing gown. This bathrobe.

I suspect that Toast, for me, is what Anthropologie is for my Australian friends. Unattainable, yes?
Perhaps the next time I am "flush" I shall propose a trade: an item of your choice from Anthro in exchange for one of my choice from Toast.
Don't worry. You have oodles of time to think on it as I am not foreseeing "flush" in my near future.
I like these curtains, I thought I'd mention. I still need to do a de-crappify on certain rooms in my house. Remind me later, okay? Last weekend I put away all the winter things. Been busy is my point.
We have a table like this

in our living room. I think I should do something similar.

And these. I like these.

things for spring
I haven't put the winter clothes away yet and I'm not buying a thing, but that doesn't mean I'm not LOOKING. All. The. Time.

Strangely, I have, of late, been admiring frocks in colors!

Though, of course, I cannot imagine wearing them.

Look! A print.
A good way to work some color into my uniform, I thought, might be a scarf. My friend C returned from Paris a couple of weeks ago with a beautiful oblong scarf and got me thinking.

I saw lots of tasseled scarves in Holland, fyi.

As soon as I'm done with this post I am standing up and trying this knot with a square scarf.

I'm still pining for a very long black skirt...

and shoes. I can never stop looking at shoes...
