we'll take a cup of kindness yet

I am not good with the whole New Year's Eve thing.
It doesn't sit well with me.
I don't like celebrating a year gone - though 2011 did me no favors. Perhaps I'm being negative? It saw the ends of several things, I was not perfectly healthy, K was not busy enough, we struggled from time to time. Then again, we went to Holland, I love my job, K did some excellent projects, the children are well...I count my blessings.
What will we do tonight? It depends. I usually like to go off to bed and ignore midnight, but the last few years Youngest has asked if I'd sit up with him and wait for the new year. He's still in bed or I'd ask him.
I think we should all sit up till midnight as I have a bottle of champagne. I think we should toast together and have Oliebollen as K is making some.
The five of us chipped in on the blu-ray dvd set of Star Wars movies (I was simply assisting my family) and so, perhaps, we could watch a movie, have a toast and run off to our beds.
Let us hope 2012 will be kind to us, let us wish 2012 will be kind to you -

And there's a hand my trusty friend !
And give us a hand o' thine !
And we'll take a right good-will draught,
for auld lang syne.

blackbird's two minute movie review

Each summer (Memorial Day) and each winter (Christmas time) we venture forth, as a family, to the movies. This is not as easy as you think as we are: in various stages of employ at any given time (Middle worked overnight the day after Christmas), don't necessarily have the same taste in films (I am not seeing The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo) and often could not see the same film together (Oldest is not seeing The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo with me). It can be a challenge to find something we'd all see and then set a date and go. Fortunately, the holidays often provide "family fare" and this time we lucked out and went to see The Muppets.

We each had varying knowledge/love for the Muppets and the movie managed to entertain us all for a couple of hours. It was cute enough to make us smile and sprinkled with enough celebrity cameos to keep us looking. (Does anyone know who that huge blue muppet guy is?) As we sat down, Youngest gave me the plot:

So, the way these things usually go is that for some reason the Muppet's theater is going to be knocked down or taken away or something and the only way to save it is to put on a show.

And that, my friends, is exactly what happened.

All the Muppets had to be rounded up (with the help of a montage) to get back together and do a show after Gary and his brother, Walter, learn of a plot to tear down the Muppet studios.

That's Gary and Walter there - don't waste your time wondering why one is a Muppet and one isn't. People don't question things like that in Muppet movies.
In fact, I wasn't really prepared for that and several other facets of Muppet filmage such as breaking into spontaneous song and humans interacting with Muppets. I don't think I'd ever seen a Muppet movie and aside from guest hosts I wasn't sure Muppets interacted with humans.
ANYWAY.

There are bad guys (Middle likes the bear) and funny props and inside jokes and we had a good time despite the fact that we had found ourselves in the filthiest theater in all of Tuvalu. (I brought an orange to eat and was thrilled to be able to sniff it as the stench in the room was awful!)

The best scenes are definitely the big ones, the ones with as many Muppets as possible. Cutecutecute.
We aren't an easy bunch to entertain but we were all smiling.
Have a look at Amy Adams's costumes too, charmingly retro.

I think I'd give it an eight!

the internet is a vast and varied place

Isn't this a lovely lake house? If we win the lottery we'll need at least two houses. One by fresh water for K and one near sea water for me.
This would be a good one for K (I don't mean to imply we'd live apart).

I'd still collect stones if I won the lottery. I'd put them on the windowsills just the way I do now.

This room looks so inviting and comfortable (and is in a hotel? It must be, look at the door) on the interwebs but I know, perfectly well, that if I checked in to a hotel room like this and saw the condition of the furniture, I'd complain.

I like this room too, but it's too complicated.
(Have you noticed my centered text? I can't be arsed to fix it and, so, I'll pay homage to Alice with it.)

I love the idea of a sleeping porch. Never mind. It's 35 degrees here and I'm loving the idea of flannel sheets.

When I take down the icicles in the dining room I'll make a garland of the bells and hang them near the fire like this. No one seems to mind the icicles in the dining room but my boss spent the evening ducking them - though he's no taller than K who walks among them without a problem.

I am truly hoping for inclement weather. I need some snow and ice. I'm sending back one of my Christmas presents (a sweater) and buying these La Canadiennes.  Discountdiscountdiscount. They are the same price as the sweater and were originally two and a half times that. Score.

Waterproof and warm, I'm looking forward to wearing them.

God bless us, everyone!

It is done.
Christmas Part 1, the Eve, in which we dined upon Cuban sandwiches with little fanfare. Though, actually, just before the dining, and after K realized he had forgotten to buy an amaryllis for my aunt, at 5:40pm, AS WHOLE FOODS WAS CLOSING, we rushed there, like crazy people, and I ducked around a security guard to grab a lovely orchid. That was exciting. In the afternoon we wrapped presents and watched Love Actually and I had a good cry. I also put little faces on six ping pong balls which I slipped into the boys stockings. Why? No idea.

balls

Christmas Part 2, The Reckoning, Morning, had us waking at the relatively sane hour of 7:00. We assembled in the living room and had a lovely time opening gifts. Highlights included Middle's wrapping paper (a year of Maxim magazine) and my Sandra Juto Wrist Worms, which I have wished for for a year.

From packaging to fit, they are my dream wrist warmers and I want to wear them all the time.
My mom came by and we had coffee and presents and prepared for:

Christmas Part 3, The Stew. As is our custom, we drove to my aunt and uncle's house for his exceptional chicken stew and the annual Tacky Christmas Card Contest (we lost) and lots of laughter and love. Full and tired and happy, our day was not over! We traveled a short distance to K's mom's house for:

Christmas Part 4, With Ham and Cousins. A crowd, yummy food, presents! No one makes a ham like K's mom and I had no trouble at all assembling a stellar sandwich and would like to drive back out there today for another. Most of the cousins are grown up now and it's fun to watch them together.
I got a great deal on Bucky Balls and, I must say, they were a hit.
Home to our beds, happy and fat. The boys were done but K and I still had to prepare for Boxing Day: Christmas Part 5, The Boss Comes To Dinner.

We set out for a new supermarket for ingredients. At home K cooked, I cleaned and, at six, my dear boss and his sweet wife arrived with lots of wonderful wine and we laughed and ate (so much!) and drank up all the wine and had a very enjoyable evening. And, apart from that odd feeling of having my boss in the dining room (like seeing your teacher at the mall) they were very nice company. I like his wife very much and always wish for more time with her.

photo

Dinner was lobster corn chowder, artichokes with hot mayonnaise (an inside joke and delicious) and sticky toffee pudding. Oh, and, K wanted to test his new smoker and do some country ribs which he brought to the table completely undercooked and could have poisoned my employer! Also, rosemary roasted cashews. And maybe some cheese. Olives? Yes.
It was lovely fun and I have threatened everyone within earshot that I am not moving from my bed today as I am tired...though I think there's more artichoke dip in the fridge...

it came upon a midnight clear

Christmas is hours away.
I was the last in the office today and then had lunch with friends.
Nothing is wrapped, though the boys are busy with K's present tonight.
Tomorrow I have a manicure and will do the wrapping.
I've made two kinds of cookies and need to finish prettying up the house...my boss is coming for dinner on Boxing Day!
Tomorrow, I've decided, we'll watch Love Actually.

oh what fun

Much to their dismay, I am posting things the boys have shown me in the half hour before dinner last night.
(I told you not to show her things on the internet! She kills them!)

It all started with these reindeer. They spoke an entirely different language when they showed them to me. (Herp?)

We moved on to this. I must tell you that the expression on the reindeer's face is very Middle.

There was a segue to this, which Middle had shown me on the train in the morning.

And that had really come from a conversation, at dinner, about this, which, naturally, brought us to this.
I'm sure you can understand the progression here.

Oldest rounded out the conversation as I was setting the table with this delight.

Middle countered with this one, but I like the original best.

tis the season

I got an email this morning from my favorite and only cousin, mom of tiny F.
F (singing):
"Deck the Halls with boughs of holly
Fa la la la la, la la la la,
Tis the season to be sorry,
Fa la la la la, la la la la!"

Last night was a late one. A special company dinner at an old-school steak house.
Sometimes a girl needs a filet mignon, creamed spinach and a baked potato and I was fortunate enough to have just that. And, for the second time this month I walked from midtown to the station late at night. Fear not, it's not like I'm walking alone in the dark in the city at 11pm. I could barely make my way through the crowds in the artificial daylight light.

We had our Ugly Christmas Sweater party. It expanded into Just Plain Ugly Christmas as we unpacked a hot pink Christmas tree we had in storage and people lined the room with Christmas suspenders and Santa hats with blinking lights and even, well, I can't explain this - have a look.

Two of my friends have those musical snowmen from the Hallmark store on their desks and they created sweaters to match them!
They won one of the prizes. It was amazing work and we had lots of fun.

You know what's tough to do?

Pack boxes with wrist warmers/fingerless glove things. Just sayin.

Finally, spotted down the hall, the bulletin board from The Usual Suspects!

AMAZING.

oh what fun

I was peeping around in my flickr archives and found this -

 gray sky

from not so long ago...but Youngest looks so different.

Say goodbye! (I had a little cry.)

   car

Oldest sold his little, old, green car and bought a newer, safer, little white car. I worried daily about him in that little green car (no air bags, frequently needing service) and will be happy to let that go. The new car is a five speed and I know he loves that.

Note to me: bring in a pine bough for where the kid portraits were.

 Other note to me:

  neutrals

find something for over the fireplace!

It's my last week of work before the holiday and I am:

having my bangs trimmed gratis by the lady who cut my hair at the fancy salon

attending a company dinner with a team I work with

having lunch with my friend A

going to an Ugly Christmas Sweater party!

Can you see me in a Christmas sweater? I shudder to think, but I have to say, it is yet another way my company is fun to work for as it's a great way to spend an afternoon during what will, undoubtedly, be a long week.

the stars were brightly shining

So, not everyone in my real life knew who both Dave and David were from the holiday party story yesterday - but, for those who did, I was FUNNY AS HELL.

Yesterday was the annual scarf sample sale, held just downstairs from my office.
Oh, the pressure!
The excitement!
The DISCOUNTS.
The scarf company, you see, did business with my company some years back and, as a result, grants employees at my office an additional 25% discount.
Hundreds of scarves await us when we descend and, frankly, I have to spend the first half hour orienting myself so as not to become overwhelmed. (This is not the luxury scarf sale wherein I can choose one scarf and need to know which one I might like before I head in - this is the sale in which nothing is more than $30 and most things are in the $10 - $15 range.)
To make matters even more exciting, the first two hours of the sale are for the friends and family of the company - and that's us.
I bought a pile of things for me and a couple of things for others (this does embarrass me, what can I say?).
Notable:

This set for Little A in Tokyo. Little A is 17 this year. Note to me: SEND PARCEL TO TOKYO.

Curly lamb vest? All the rage. $20. Wore it for 20 minutes. Conclusion? Too much vest for my small frame, no matter how cheap.

"Touch" gloves which enable the user to, uh, use their touch device. Not warm enough for K (we discussed on the phone) and, even in a small, too big for me.

Funny hat? Too funny. Not purchased. $7.

Most beloved purchase.
Oversized. Silk. Black and white.
My price? $30.

silent night

I know!
I haven't written a word for days.
I have some things in draft.
In the meantime:
Last night, Middle attended a party at David LaChapelle's studio but I was certain he was attending a party given by Dave Chappelle.

I'm sure you can imagine the follow-up conversation we had.

all is bright

The party was a great success.
I kept the skirt with the shorts in it...and spent the evening showing them off (much to K's chagrin).
I looked great. Here I am resting my weary legs on the train.

I pointed out to K that I was posing like Diane Keaton.
Everyone had a great time and the restaurant staff was so charming that the evening turned out beautifully.

Last weekend Oldest went into town to run some errands and was overrun by SANTAS.

It was SantaCon! There was a twitter feed!
He couldn't get near his favorite bar. Oh, the howling!

Oldest, I mean, not the Santas.

Meanwhile, it's pretty festive round here.

Does it look like someone TP'd our tiny tree?

Every year Youngest asks for a pony.

Hush.

Screen shot 2011-12-11 at 1.29.25 PM

Now, look, I do feel terrible about this. This is a beautiful photo of the gorgeous lady who sells Christmas trees at the end of the street. She's French-Canadian and lives in her van from Thanksgiving until Christmas morning right there on the street. That's not what I feel terrible about (though it's quite a thing, isn't it?). I feel badly about not having the name of the photographer. Holmes, maybe? He did stunning portraits of NY Christmas tree salespeople last week. Go and see.
It's Joseph! Joseph Holmes!
So, yes. These amazing people live in their vans all over the city, selling trees. Magically, on Thanksgiving eve, the wooden frames of their sales areas are erected and then the trees arrive and they move in. Neighbors feed them and let them use their bathrooms and restaurants send wires out to loan them power. It's amazing to me and it happens the same way every year.
Mr. Holmes has captured the essence of them. They are each wonderful characters.

Are you feeling Christmas-y yet?
I'm beginning to.

it's the most wonderful time

... of the work week.
It's the day of the office party. Arranged by me. (And two others.)
Yes, this year, I sweated out the details over three (!) unbelievable Spanish lunches with mucho Sangrias!
It's all set.
Tapas and toasting to commence at 5:00. Or 4:00 if you're on the party planning team cause we've got to go over early and check things out. Like the wine. Just saying.

And what am I wearing? I know you're wondering. I have two skirts in a bag behind me and SOMEONE will have to help me decide.

In my head I think all party goers (including me) should be dressed thusly:

but it isn't that formal.

I saw this yesterday

and I luff it, but I'm too short.

Likewise this:

I'm a little short.

So, what's in my bag?
One of these:

and one of these:

Both sheer, to be worn with black tights. One has a mini skirt under the sheer layer and one has shorts. Shorts!
I hate to tell you - I like the shorts one best but I'm not sure I can pull it off.

I'll keep you posted!

Starting Monday, 12/5 the railroad begins a new Quiet Car pilot program on select peak hour trains on some branches. Under the program, 4 morning and 6 evening rush hour trains that operate between the suburban zone and city zone will have a designated quiet car - free of cell-phone conversations, sound from other electronic devices and loud conversations. The railroad will gauge customer reaction to the program before expanding it to all branches.
The railroad ought to have a little chat with me, just sayin. This is a brilliant idea.

From Middle: did you know it's anatomically impossible for a horse to puke. Cause, you know, I was thinking how hysterical it would be if you just saw a horse vomit. (makes vomit noise) Aw, nuts, the horse just puked on the rug...cause they live indoors.

Have I already linked here? Because the Uncastables are awesome. And they make me squirm.

Also, I had a little to and fro with db of Anthroparodie. Well played, db. Well played.

Please to enjoy the Unimpressed Astronaut. Sometimes at my house we like to say asstronaut. We are mature like that.

Youngest gave Middle the funniest card on earth - personalized for the occasion.

All I can say is that we are reduced to giddy laughter with just a glance.

  card1

Apparently the cover illustration has modified to be Troll Face and the interior portrait is Mi Gusta? I don't know. They have vowed to keep all internet hysteria from me as I "ruin it." (which, I suppose, is exactly what I am doing now)
